What is couples therapy?
Couples therapy is a space for two people to work on the relationship together, with someone in the room whose only job is to help the partnership — not to take sides. We look at the patterns that keep you stuck: the same fight on repeat, the slow drift into roommate-like distance, the resentment that’s built up but never gets said out loud. Sometimes the work is about rebuilding trust after a specific injury, like infidelity. Sometimes there’s no single event at all — just two people who love each other and can’t seem to find their way back to feeling like a team. Both are real reasons to come in.
How I approach it
I focus on the underlying dynamics between partners — how you each show up when things get hard, what you’re really asking for underneath the argument, and how your individual histories shape what you bring into the relationship. I have particular depth in helping couples recover after infidelity or betrayal, using a structured approach rather than just “talking it out” and hoping for the best. Whatever brought you in, my goal is to help you build a relationship you both actually want to be in, not just one you’ve learned to tolerate.
Couples therapy across the life stages
Newer partnerships and young couples are often building their shared life for the first time — merging habits, families, finances, and expectations — often while a small child is reshaping the household at the same time. Learning how to fight fair and repair well this early sets the pattern for decades to come.
Midlife couples often arrive carrying a lot at once: health changes, aging parents, kids leaving home, and years of relationship history to sort through. It’s a common and honest season for a couple to quietly ask themselves whether they want to keep going together — and that question deserves real space, not avoidance.
Long-established couples, including those who’ve been together for decades, often come in around reconnecting after years of autopilot, navigating retirement or health changes together, or simply wanting to feel like partners again rather than co-managers of a household.
I work with couples around concerns like:
- Communication breakdown & recurring conflict
- Infidelity & betrayal recovery
- Growing apart / loss of connection
- Major life transitions (new baby, empty nest, retirement)
- Blended family & parenting differences
- Deciding whether to stay together
