What is individual therapy?
Individual therapy is one-on-one work focused on you — your history, your patterns, and whatever’s making life harder than it needs to be right now. Some people come in with something specific they want to work through: anxiety, a difficult relationship, a loss, a decision they’re stuck on. Others just know something isn’t sitting right and want a guide as they figure out what that is. Both are good reasons to start.
How I approach it
My approach is trauma-informed and grounded in twenty-five years of clinical experience, and I tailor it to what you actually need rather than a one-size-fits-all method. That might mean brief, focused work on a specific problem, or longer-term therapy that goes deeper into patterns that have followed you for a while. I bring the same directness and care to individual work that I bring to couples and sex therapy — this is a place to be fully honest, without managing anyone else’s reaction to what you say.
Individual therapy across the life stages
Younger adults often come in while building the foundations of adult life — a first serious relationship, a career, independence from family of origin — and benefit from sorting through old patterns before they harden into permanent ones.
Midlife tends to bring its own load: caregiving for aging parents, health changes, career shifts, and re-evaluating choices made years earlier. It’s a common and useful time to ask what you actually want the next chapter to look like.
Older adults face real, valid reasons to be in therapy too — loss, changing health, evolving relationships, and identity questions that don’t stop showing up just because you’ve gotten older.
I work with individuals around concerns like:
- Anxiety & life transitions
- Trauma
- Grief & loss
- Relationship patterns
- Self-esteem & identity
- Caregiving & family-of-origin stress
